Informe Semanal (programa que dirige Alicia Gómez Montano) ha sido un espejo en el que se ha reflejado la historia de nuestro país y también del mundo en estos últimos decenios, y está incluido en el libro Guinness de los records.
Desde aquí, mi más sincera felicitación a un programa que admiro desde pequeño, y a por los 40, los 50 y los que vengan.
Grandes éxitos de los 80 (V): Evelyn King
Evelyn King es un ejemplo de carrera meteórica y sé que soy insistente, pero ella también es un ejemplo de una persona que llegó a la fama desde un puesto de trabajo de lo más resptable y humilde.
Evelyn nació en el barrio del Bronx, una zona de Nueva York conocida por desgracia por ser un área más bien depauperada. A los pocos años se marchó a Pennsylvania, y allí se crió en Philadelphia. Y lo más sorprendente es que su carrera comenzó gracias a un cazatalentos que la descubrió cuando trabajaba como mujer de la limpieza en aquella ciudad, allá por finales de los 70, cuando apenas era una quinceañera.
Sus primeros éxitos por tanto son patrimonio de los 70. A finales de ese decenio salieron sus discos Smooth Talk (1977) que lanzó con apenas 16 años y alcanzó el disco de oro y Shame (1978), que alcanzaría otro disco de oro y su único Top 10 en una conocida revista musical estadounidense llamada Billboard magazine y su listado de los 100 éxitos más sonados de la semana. Su tercer disco, I don't know if it's right (1979) mantuvo su éxito y le reportaría todavía otro oro.
Sus primeros discos los firmaría como Evelyn "Champagne" King, un sobrenombre o apodo cariñoso que su madre le había puesto de pequeña, y que era su segundo apodo (antes su madre la llamaba Evelyn "Bubbles" King, que significa Evelyn 'Burbujas'). A finales de los 70 tanto el productor (T.Life) como su propia madre, pensaron que ese apodo era demasiado infantil para una mujer que estaba arrasando en el panorama musical internacional, y decidieron suprimir el mote cariñoso de sus discos.
La cantante decidió finalizar los 70 y comenzar los 80 con sendos discos del estilo R&B (Rythm and Blues), discos que le lanzaron a la fama entre los seguidores de este estilo, mezcla entre el jazz, el blues y los ritmos afroamericanos, pero que perdieron algo de fuelle a nivel comercial, en una época en la que la música pop y dance estaba empezando a a comerle el terreno a los ritmos más folklóricos.
Evelyn supo cambiar gradualmente su estilo y sus primeros discos de los 80 se adaptaron a los nuevos ritmos.
Comenzamos en 1981 con su álbum I'm in love, que alcanzaría el puesto 28 entre 200 en la Billboard Magazine, si bien seguía siendo una canción R&B. El título homónimo del disco fue votado como el nº1 de los temas R&B pero también alcanzó el puesto 40 de las listas de éxitos del pop. ¿Por qué? La clave fue mezclar los sonidos R&B con los nuevos sonidos que proporcionaba el sintetizador, una herramienta que Evelyn no había utilizado antes en la composición de sus temas. El segundo single de este álbum, Don't hide our love, llegaría al nº6 de las listas R&B.
Sin embargo lo mejor aún estaba por llegar. 1982 fue su mejor año a nivel profesional. Su séptimo disco se llamaría Get loose y sería el álbum que le servía en bandeja su doble disco de platino, todo un fenómeno para el momento, además del mayor número de ventas, millonarias. Los temas de este disco triunfaban allá donde sonaban: Get Loose se ganaba el puesto 5 de la Billboard Magazine de entre 200, el nº1 de las listas R&B, y su canción Love come down se convertía en la única que alcanzaba un puesto destacado en las listas de éxitos del Reino Unido, llegando a subir al puesto 7 del top 10. Betcha she don't love you tenía un empuje más modesto. Nº2 en las R&B y puesto 49 en las listas del pop.
El disco octavo, So romantic, aparecía en 1984. De entre todos sus temas, sólo Just for the night se subía al puesto 32 de la Billboard, mientras en las listas de ventas del pop bajaba al puesto 45.
A partir de entonces su éxito en el mundo del pop fue desinflándose mientras su éxito en los R&B sin embargo, se mantenía casi intacto.
Los temas High Horse y Your personal touch, de su noveno disco, A Long Time Coming (A Change is Gonna Come), le dieron sonados éxitos en los top 10 de las listas europeas mientras subían mucho más en las listas R&B de los Estados Unidos.
En 1986 Evelyn cambia de productora y se contrata en BMI Records. El álbum de debut con esta nueva productora, Flirt, no tiene el éxito esperado, y ello no obstante a pesar de que el tema que da título al disco (como otros como Hold on to what you've got, que puedes ver aquí abajo) llegaría al puesto 3 de las R&B, pero sólo al 192 de 200 en la Billboard. El siguiente disco de promoción, Girl next door, que cerraría la década para ella, ni siquiera alcanzó al single de debut de su anterior álbum.
Después de este agridulce resultado, Evelyn no volvería a producir un nuevo trabajo hasta 1995, con el título I'll Keep A Light On, que pasaría bastante desapercibido por el público. Y en 2007, Open book suponía su última aparición en la escena musical.
Lo que está claro es que Evelyn King fue una gran artista, que logró sintonizar mucho mejor con los gustos afroamericanos de los USA pero no sólo, cotizó también un increíble éxito en las listas del pop. Si bien en Europa logró deslumbrar, en el viejo continente su éxito pasó más de puntillas que en el Nuevo Mundo.
