there ain't no Cure for pop
+ I have always been intrigued for the ability of The Cure (mainly Robert Smith) to compose pop gems and at the same time, maintaining that dark, kind of obscure gothic group, you know what I mean, right?. Please, explain. If you can not, please listen to:

* Boys don't cry (new wave's hymn).

* Friday, I'm in love.

* Love song.

* Let's go to bed.

* Pictures of you (ok, maybe this is obscure)

Cooper (finest spanish pop)
+ Today, I bring you 3 wonderful songs from one of the best pop groups in Spain. See that today I use the term pop in the most classical way. Pop music, as The Beatles, I mean. They are Cooper. They are just fantastic. Forget that you don't know spanish. Just listen to the music.

* Cierra los ojos.

* Cerca del sol.

* Silverstone.

+ Please, if you like what you hear, buy Cooper' records. (you know already, these mp3 links will disappear soon, they are there just for you to hear).

Graham Parker's first album
* Legend says he was working in a gas station, composed between you and me and then, Nick Lowe produced his first album.

* In the meantime, he recruited some of the best talents in London these days. People from what was called pub rock: Brinsley Schwarz (guitar, Hammond, sax), Bob Andrews (keyboards Lwerey & Hammond), Martin Belmont (guitar), Stephen Goulding (drums) and Andrew Bodnar (bass). That was The Rumour. With them, he made some of the most glorious songs in 1976. His first album, Howlin' wind, finds Graham full of energy, rude as rhythm & blues can be, sweet as a soulman, angry as only Van Morrison can be. I have selected some of these songs for you to listen and enjoy.

* For instance: rock and roll: back to schooldays.

* soul: you've got to be kidding.

* pop: silly thing.

* R&B: gipsy blood.

* If you think Parker has lost his ability to compose wonderful songs (ok, not so r&b as those early masterpieces), please listen to his last album, your country, from 2004 (lil' bit o' country, please). You have a glimpse of that at bloodshot records.

+ Loor y gloria al gran Graham Parker.

Nick Lowe's brilliant songs
* The other day I visited the excellent blog robot plays guitar and found an interesting post of the song what's so funny about peace, love and understanding. A tittle that seemed to be from the flower power era (acuarius era, hippy years, 60's). Instead, Nick Lowe composed it in the second half of the 70s. Probably influenced by Vietnam war. Please, listen to it here. Last year, this song became kind of a hymn, specially in the US, used for the V.O.T.E. movement and for other people opposing the crazy role of that great country in wars throughout the world, specially in Iraq, now.

* But Nick Lowe did not have much success with that song. It was Elvis Costello who made it to the top. And also, Curtis Stigers who sang it for Whitney Huston's film, the bodyguard (!¡, strange roads). Those days, Nick Lowe was the producer of the early Elvis Costello (& The Attractions), of the great Graham Parker (impressive first album, Howlin' wind), and others. For a comprehensive list, please visit this page.

* Nick Lowe's songs are perfect pieces of pop music. His most clear influences are rock and roll and early pop music. But of course, he sure loves other types (country, for instance: he was married to Carlene Carter, ahijada del gran hombre de negro (Mr. Johnny Cash). Please, listen to his first pop hit, cruel to be kind. Spanish people will probably remember a version one of the triunfitos did a couple years go.

* A sample of his good taste for rock and roll is this wonderful rocker I knew the bride (when she used to rock and roll). These influences were shared with his pal, Dave Edmunds (more rocker than Nick), with whom he played in Rockpile.

* My last two songs are two other perfect pop songs. Rose of england and without love. Please, if you wish to practice your spanish, please visit this excellent page.

* Finally, Nick Lowe has a new album these days. Yep Roc Records has it, including two complete songs here.

+ Loor y gloria al gran Nick Lowe!

A liitle bit of love (lil' bit of Al Green)
+ See, we have a new Al Green album out there (everything's ok). I have listened to it a little bit and I felt an irresistible impulse to make love (uhmm, we'll see).

* What I've heard, it's very similar to his last album, i can't stop (2003), which saw the re-encounter with his long time friend and producer, Willie Mitchell. From this excellent album, please listen (and dance) to this superb a million to one.

* Reverend Al Green, probably he praised a lot. What a voice!. Please, listen to his great how can you mend a broken heart (we listened to Bee Gee's version last year).

* As I told you, be careful or you'll have to look for your love, wherever he/she is. Listen to love and happiness.

* Finally, get exhausted with let's stay together.

New rock songs from small labels
+ Just visited indiepages.com and found glorious and joyous songs.

* Have a look (i mean listen to) at Ted Leo & The Pharmacists (speedy song), Human Television (great power pop song), The Mountain Goats, and some more there (use the link above).

* Little bit of good old today's punk, please listen to The Paddingtons, from poptones.co.uk.

* The Beatifics ara a terrific (sorry for the rhyme) group, with great pop hooks, cristaline guitars and 60's voices. Please, listen to sorry yesterdays. From the bus stop label.

* Since you are there, at the bus stop, please listen to bronze. If the other dozen or so groups are so good, .. we'll go back.

More spanish pop-rock
+ I've been busy lately, this new year rentreé has been bit difficult, that's why I could not post this week. I hope I post enough new songs this weekend for you to enjoy.

+ Interesting the discussion we have with the definition of pop and rock (see M-Clan's post below). Please, contribute!.

* Bombones (chocolate candies) is a fresh new group from Sevilla (olé). There's a song free from his debut record, but the link isn't working properly (at least when I write this). Please, return later and enjoy Bombones' pop-rock.

* The Shannons, from Bilbao, wonderful influences (Byrds, Beatles,,,), and in this song, The Church. Do you remember Del Shannon?.

* Almost stars now, The Sunday Drivers, are a powerful pop rock group from Toledo (not Ohio), Spain. Listen to this sing, better life, from their first album.

* The Happy Losers are number one also in this indiepop galaxy. Listen to i'll cry for your tears. Nice voices!.

+ As you probably already noticed, all these groups belong to Rock Indiana's impressive catalog.

Hank Garland
+ You probably heard (read) that country/jazz guitar legend died last december 28.

+ There are a lot of pages that will tell you his story: part wonderful, part sad.

+ Maybe someone will know about his car accident. Was it a murder attempt?. Is there any info around?. One spanish paperwriter (big old Diego A. Manrique) just comments that possibility (El País, 7 enero 2005).

+ What today counts, at least in this blog, is listening to his music:

* Listen to his first hit: Sugarfoot Rag.

* The guitar intro to jingle bell rock was his composition. Here you can hear it (kinda) in a George Strait cover.

* John B. Sebastian, head of The Lovin' Spoonful, talked about him and the other A-Team guys of Nashville studios in nashville cats.

* Also, he contributed to Elvis' little sister.

* And the opening notes to Patsy Cline's I Fall To Pieces.

+ As I have said other times, loor y gloria a los pioneros!.

+ All this comes from the previous post discussion about what is rock or pop. Myself, I don't like to take attitude as a feature to distinguish pop and rock. Also, we should remember that the term pop comes from popular. In any case, we can tell between good music and mainstream, can't we?. In any case, I like pop and rock. For examples, please visit my blog. Or, whatever (ejem).

+ Sol Lagarto is a rock group, that's clear. Isn't?. A lot of influences are there, just to discover: southern rock, stones, ....please listen to a couple of songs from the disc called mira adelante (look ahead). Go to that page and download the songs.

* Hey, Dick, tell us more about Sol Lagarto. Spanish or english, please.

* From his page, we'll arrive to revolution69's official website: please, listen to that's all.

* A little bit further up on the road, we stopped by to listen to The Midnight Travellers (lottta black crowes' influences). Great!. Please, listen to electric neon flowers and strange story. Hey, guys, poned los mp3 enteros, hombre!

M-Clan, spanish power pop!

Eh, coleguis?.

+ Spanish power pop (but they tell us this is rock, he, he).

+ I would like to hear your comments about it:

* Mario.

* Hasta luego, rock and roll (so long, r'nr).

Devendra Banhart, you haven't heard this voice in your entire life
+ It's great when you discover something that is really new to your ears. Probably your neurons (maybe 200-1000 millions of them) open up a new folder, or whatever they do, since there is nothing where to locate this sound. At least, they sure fire a lot between themselves and to other parts of your body (this is how neurons work, you know, firing!).

+ So, I heard Devendra Banhart and I got shocked. What can I say. As I said, a completely different voice, reminds me a bit of Marc Bolan, though (my Banhart neurons are starting to get inputs...). The arrangements are very subtle. A guitar is the main instrument. And Devendra's voice.

* Please, decide for yourself. Listen to the body breaks.

* Also, listen to and watch little yellow spiders.

* This beard is for Siobhan.

* Be kind.

+ Hey, the boy can play!

Great covers from La Plata, Argentina
+ Once I knew an interesting man. He lives in La Plata (Argentina) and he is graduating in english studies and language. His name, Felipe Díaz Legaspe.

+ But I met him because I had the privilege of listening his songs, covers of great pop songs: completely performed by himself, all alone.

+ His voice is not the best, he needs a singer, but as a musician, I already told him, he should go for the big time.

+ Please, listen to some of his renditions:

* Feel a whole lot better (the byrds).

* Here comes your man (the pixies).

* Give me another chance (big star).

+ If you like what you hear and want to get to the man, please leave a comment.

Mark Knopfler
+There is no justice in this world (ok, we all know it).

+ I have seen very few comments regarding his last job, Shangri-la, which appeared last september. Overall, a great piece of music, intimate if you wish, but having some of the great licks have made Mark world famous.

* There are two free songs on that page, exactly wm or ra videos, but at leat they are complete for you to listen and watch: Boom, Like That and Shangri-la.

* If you wish to hear a lot of Mark's songs live, please go here. A good fan maintains it.

+ Please, look it up!:

Shan·gri-la ,n.
1. An imaginary remote paradise on earth; utopia.
2. A distant and secluded hideaway, usually of great beauty and peacefulness.

[After Shangri-La, the imaginary land in the novel Lost Horizon by James Hilton.]

Shangri-la, n : any place of complete bliss and delight and peace [syn: eden, paradise, nirvana, heaven, promised land, Shangri-la]

+ So, you already know, some kind of paradise in earth is what it sounds like that shangri-la record.

+ In case you need something else, listen to:

* Twistin' by the pool.

* Walk of life.

* Brothers in arms.

Remember the 80s?
+ A part of the 80s are still here today. Buen humor, marcha constante, guitarras a toda velocidad, coros enfadados: los 80.

+ That is why I bring you a small portion of the catalog of Three Kings Records, a german company specialized in punk, garage, surf, rock and roll and similar stuff.

* Please, listen fresh punk-pop by The Hi*Tops: radio tonight.

* Energetic-ly brilliants Torpedo Twisters: killed by rock and roll.

* For the day: time to share. Punk-pop.

* Tom Greed and the Snowflakes: x-mas love (appropriate for the time now): scents from country-rockabilly.

* Darlington: shiloh (infectious hooky punk-pop song), probably the poppiest of the whole catalog.

* Fandango Aguileño.

* Pardicas del "Banana" .

5 amazons from the south
+ Amazon is a great place for buying muchas cosas. As you know, I like american music, this is my selection from amazon.

* Los Lobos: Rita

* Alejandro Escovedo: hard road.

* Old 97's: In The Satellite Rides a Star.

* Steve Earle: Guitar town.

* The Flatlanders: Neon of Nashville.

With you pa' siempre, Cuba!
* Buena Vista Social Club: hasta siempre comandante che guevara.

* Elíades Ochoa, patria.

* Compay Segundo: yo vengo aquí.

* Pablo Milanés: yolanda.

* Sindo Garay/Sexteto Nacional/Son: Yo me quiero morir en Cuba.

* Eduardo Sosa: un poco más que hoy.

+ Some of these links are actually in Cuba, so be careful with the bandwith. It will be better if you download them and play it while in your mchine.

Without you
* Yesterday, I heard for the first time ohne dich (without you, sin tí), a tremendous ballad from the last record of german industrial rock group Rammstein. I think you should hear it immediately. There's even a video, more tragic probably than the song, really!.

* Another terrific without you song was performed by Harry Nilsson, although his biggest hit was everybody's talking (MIdnight Cowboy film).

* Listen another without you, by Little Sister, an obscure mid-90's group, fronted by a soul woman, Patrice Pike.

* Maybe Rammstein liked this without you by Nazareth (now that some of the world celebrated this small town of Palestina).

Pre-dawn of men
+ Like in 2001: a space odissey.

+ One can argue, of course, yesterday's post is only a way of talking. Yeah, I agree. So, we must go back in time to find our roots.

* Please, listen to our forefather Louis Jordan, let the good times roll.

* Or Mr. Bo Diddley, who may your lover be.

* The great Chuck Berry, rock and roll music.

* Another ancestor, Mr. Ray Charles: what'd I say.

* Brownie McGhee & Sonny Terry, terrific pair of bluesmen, singing freight train.

* and of course, the big white boy who started it all, Elvis, blue moon of kentucky.

...and in the beginning, it was The Beatles
+ I can think in several ways of starting a new year. Many of them are similar to those you use to start any other day. However, today is the first day of a new year, we cleaned all the mess, got a shower, have some breakfast and...

+ here you are, The Beatles!

* I saw her standing there.

* Blackbird.

* Come together.

* Something.

* Golden slumbers, carry the weight, the end.

* All you need is love.

+ and, please, have a thought, or a prayer , for those argentinian people dead for the stupidity of some firecrackers lit inside the venue.
