(River Segura aint' no Mississippi)

(but when it comes to play and sing the blues, ah boy, forget about chipirrin and jotas....)

+ Please, listen to some blues as performed by (the sure) river:

* Little wing.

* Mistery train.

* Baby, what you want me to do.

+ Hala, huertanos!

The Byrds

+ After some posts with new (relatively) groups and some trashies, we go back to our basics, to the classics.

+ Ladies and gents, The Byrds (1), (2), (3).

* all I really want to do.

* so you want to be a rock and roll star.

* turn, turn, turn.

* hickory wind.

* the ballad of easy rider.

Joaquín Luqui, you didn't have to die

* Yesterday.

+ Loor y gloria a Joaquín Luqui.

The Edisons
+ We are in great debt to Thomas Alva Edison, great inventor and businessman. Among other things, phonograph, electricity, light bulbs, and radio.

+ Maybe, that's why some Tampa Bay's musicians decided to use his last name to name their band. A power pop band. The Edisons.

+ They have an excellent album you should hear immediately. Lost in the dream (2005) is a perfect album, full of great songs. There you have all the necessary in each and every song. Guitars, voices, melodies, and rhythm.

+ They are a whole new group, with no immediate reconocible sounds, except that of a great pop job. And this is an added value, since these are songs you have never listened before, really. Of course, you can smell some of their influences, The Beatles the main probably, but you will also remember The Dwight Twilley Band if you hear the flame., but also Tears for Fears (again, the fab four) in the title track.

+ If you want to listen to the guys, please go to the pages of not lame recordings, where you have 5 two minutes' songs. Or go from these links below:

* lost in the dream.

* The flame.

* The start.

* I can't go on.

* Dangerous girl.

+ Interesting to note that for the critic at not lame, there is one song that recalls him of Klaatu. You probably remember the story of this group. In 1976, they were believed to be the own Beatles recording under a fictitious name.

+ Interesting also to know there are other The Edisons, in this case from Nashville, Tennessee, also similar but very different.

+ The Edisons, from Tampa Bay, Florida. Great band.

The Lassie Foundation
+ It is good to create a foundation with your extra-money. However, I don't think these guys, militians of indie pop, could afford it.

+ It is possible, though, that their income increase dramatically if we all buy their excellent last record, face your fun.

+ Exponents of noise pop, they have switched a little bit in this last album to re-explore sounds we thought they were gone: those of 80's U2, The Church, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Teardrop Explodes, and so on. Please listen to these two gems from this album, and you tell me (please read on the left to know how to handle these two songs):

* Sunset.

* Money, money.

* Previous songs from his 2000 album, Pacifico, can be sampled here.

+ In anisette records, you can hear two songs from El rey:

* Promise ring.

* I can be her man.

+ In summary, The Lassie Foundation have created a perfect disk that will not be outdated in at least 30 years, I swear. These are the sounds of 20th century!

I'm sorry, los freaks ain't over yet

Smashing Pumpkins
+ I have to confess that I did not listen to these guys when they came. That is, at the beginning of the 90s. I had one of these no music whatsoever phases. Of course, I heard some pieces on the radio, I remember Paco Pérez Brian playing them in radio 3 on sundays, those I remember well, 1979.

* Today.

* Cherub rock.

+ The pumpkins were there almost at the time with Nirvana, although their essence is different from grunge and punk, and contributed to the 90s in a definitive way . Their first album was also produced by Butch Vig, from whom we talked about other days.

* Stand inside your love.

+ Ok, you can hear all the pumpkins songs in ra format in netphoria. Be sure you have an updated client. There, you'll find also midi files and lyrics.

* Mayonaise.

+ In the The Spanish Pumpkins excellent page, fans can download fonts inspired in their records.

* The end is the beginning.

+ Lot of demos and other mp3 stuff in these italian pages.

* Bullet with butterfly wings.

+ Billy Corgan's pages are also loaded. Visit and enjoy!.

* adore.

Talking Heads
+ From the time that David Byrne and pals formed the band, research on talking heads has advanced dramatically.

+ But, it is good to remember that Talking Heads were one the more succesful new wave rock bands. Seminal we would say now. Countless groups have followed that kind of punk-pop-rock, later salted also with world music.

+ In talking-heads.net you can have access to 30 seconds (oh, my) of almost all their hits. I am afraid I could not get psycho killer, take me to the river or and she was, among dozen others.

* Road to nowhere.

* Once in a lifetime.

* Lady don't mind.

* This must be the place (naive melody).

New valiant yorkers
+ This weekend is for recommendations. I heard the entire catalog of a band you should also. The first notes you hear will bring you memories of The Jam and other similar stuff.

+ The Hypertonics want you to know them. They have all their catalog free for you. Be kind. Tell them thank you (or buy them the record if you like it). They explain why this attitude here.

+ The Hypertonics answered some questions for this blog, so for you:

- Where are you, The Hypertonics, from (based):
We are from the East Village in New York City.

- Please, describe your musical influences (if any):
Our musical influences include the Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, The Jam. Our influences that are non-musical include Noam Chomsky, George Carlin, Vladimir Nabokov, and Simon Bolivar.

- Please, summarize your opinions regarding free access to music:
Free music stops the antagonistic relationship between the artist and
listener. It cuts out the middleman record labels that soak up most of
the money anyway. It's more humane, more spiritual and takes the
marketplace out of art. It takes art out of the hostage-style situation
of music for ransom. Bibles are free, and that is said to be the word of
God. A higher purpose is being served.

- Also, please summarize your opinion regarding P2P software:
Anything that allows people to communicate freely and without any
middlemen is a powerful thing. Dangerous to people is power and a great thing. All the toll booths that have been set up are now being taken down. The monopolies are being circumvented.

- Have you ever played in Spain?, do you plan to come over?
We have made it as far as the UK but haven't made it to Spain yet. We do plan to come over though. Just need an invitation...

+ Ok, more work for Paco Pérez Brian.

Uhhmmmm.

+ Let's give them a try, ok?

Tumbleweed music
+ My machine detected, in fact it was told to detect, interesting music you may want to check out. JamesApollo. His author calls it tumbleweed music, why, you can read it below, it could well reflect movement, maybe random, but also feeelings, those that allow his author to make music.

+ Please, allow me to add another adjective -maybe a label- to your music: Desert Americana.

+ Ok, that's enough. Please, go here and listen to some songs. He's got 3 mp3s for you to hear. Nicely designed web page. Then, go back here and read his words.

> What is jamesapollo?, a one-man project, a full-group?
I'm James Apollo, and yes, I am just a man, but I've got a savvy group
of musicians on deck. Don't feed them after midnight, but do let them
sleep on your couch.

> - Why the name of tumbleweed sounds/music?
I feel a bit like the tumbleweed. A traveller. Sometimes wondering
around the desert plains, sometimes jammed in the grills of cars. Just
drifting. It's an okay way to get around. The Greyhound is far too
cumbersome.

> - Please, describe your musical influences (if any):
Moonrises from the continental divide, civil war love letters,
Argentinian tangos and every sweet sound west of the mason dixon. I'm
inspired more by ideas and places than music, and the list of the
latter could get far too intimate.

> - Please, summarize your opinions regarding free access to music:
its a toss up. free music is turning the music industry on its head. I
don't know where that leaves me, but I've always been on the fringe of
the music industry anyway. I say we leave it upside down until it's
coughed up its lunch money.

> - Also, please summarize your opinion regarding P2P software:
Yeah, its got it's ups and downs. I don't want to see the album
disappear, but its great to have access to everything Alan Lomax ever
did. We used to use two cans and a string. Things are certainly easier
this way.

> - Have you ever played in Spain?, do you plan to come over?

I've yet to visit Spain, but I may be touring there this summer. If
anybody wants to get in touch, that could help speed up the process. I
know about the bullfights, so I believe I'm ready.

Spanish r'nb
* You have to listen to this superb rendition of tom waits' downtown train by spanish long time losers, j. teixi band. Go here and download the qt video (it's not complete, though, but you'll get the idea).

+ These guys are survivors, they come from the night of the times, they started with madrileña new wave in the eighties. Mermelada was that name. They still struggle in the obsolete spanish music market. They are great at shows. Hope they get many gigs !.

* There's another video in their homepage, i'm not sure but it may be ya no quiero (this one is complete).

+ OK, Teixidor!, go and get it!

The Pretenders in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
+ Now?, better later than never! Congrats, Chrissie and pals!

* Brass in pocket. Their "signature song" (for the first batch of fans). Brass was on the charts for 17 weeks and reached #1. The US release of the single was called "Brass In Pocket (I'm Special)". The mysterious lyrics to Brass have baffled listeners for nearly two decades. What is "reet"? And what might a "new skank" be? "Got bottle - I'm gonna use it..."? It's not as mind-boggling as one might think. Skank is to move one's body rhythmically from side to side, moving the arms along with the rest of the body. "Reet" means righteous. So what's she talking about? She's got herself a new way of movin' and groovin' and it's hip. As for the not-so-listener-friendly "got bottle...", that is British slang meaning "courage or confidence". (this comment from the pretenders' archives).

* Back on the chain gang. This was the first single released after the death of Jim (James Honeyman Scott) and loss of Pete (Pete Farndon). Chain Gang is the band's second signature song (after Brass In Pocket). It went up to #17 and held on to the charts for 9 weeks. (this comment also from the pretenders' archives). If you like to play the guitar, have the tab, not difficult.

* 2000 miles.

* I'll stand by you.

+ Loor y gloria a los pretenders!.

Black americana
+ Via ederblog, I get to know Queen Esther, who is defined as black americana in her page, at CD baby.

+ Gunnar is so nice to talk to us about her, but you know, I like to directly post the songs, so you do not have to go messin' around town.

* Then, at CD baby, you have 2 minutes of every song in her album. Please, listen to her raw stand by your man.

* And, the following are rm files of 4 songs, I think they are complete:

-talkin' fishbow blues.
- taster's choice.
- promise me.
- love.

+ Terrific stuff!.

...and Dylan invented folk-rock
* This is the first song Dylan played live with an electric guitar : maggie's farm. In 1965, at the Newport Folk Festival.

+ A flyer for that festival is shown here.

+ You can read that piece of rock history here, including the band he formed in situ with some members of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Dylan played a Fender Stratocaster.

+ The Newport Folk Festival goes on after all these years.

* The secong song he played was like a rolling stone.

* The third song was It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry. Then, he left the stage and returned later with the acoustic guitar to play mr tambourine man and, logically, it's all over now baby blue.

The Band
+ For a rock band, deciding its name is usually a difficult task. However, it is very important. Unfortunately, the name many bands would like to use after disputing so much was taken long ago. The Band. Definitive. El Grupo. La Banda. Perfect. Brilliant. And these two adjectives only for the name!. Now, let's listen to the guys!

+ After reading the lyrics to Steve Forbert's wild as the wind, a song dedicated to Rick Danko, I found myself surfing through a comprehensive set of pages dedicated to The Band. You got to and read them. You'll see you're reading a page of the story of rock.

+ I bring today a lot of memories of the 60s & 70s, memories of when Bob Dylan selected these guys as his band and invented folk-rock.

* Memories of the last waltz, wonderful concert and movie by Martin Scorsese (they don't do those movies anymore?). Listen to georgia on my mind, from its soundtrack.

+ Listen to some of their songs while you surf these pages.

* the weight.

* up on cripple creek.

* the shape I'm in.

* Listen to The Grateful Dead playing the night they drove old dixie down.

* Listen to the man in black singing the same song.

* Finally, listen to Rick Danko singing this lovely raining in my heart.

+ Visit the band 1967-1976 and listen to several dozens of clips.

Steve Forbert, what a troubadour!
* You probably have heard his most famous tune, that of Romeo, Romeo's tune. Maybe you didn't know who was singing. Now you know.

------------------------------Meet me in the middle of the day
--------------------------let me hear you say everything's okay
-----------------------bring me southern kisses from your room,
--------------------------more lyrics here

+ Steve has a very distinctive voice, soft and tough at the same time, lyrics that make you think and wonderful melodies. He's in these business almost forever, he started at the begining of new wave, so it's clear that his songs were dimmed by the light thrown on New York's new wave scene.

+ But, he published a #1 record last year (just like there's nothin' to it, 2004). So, I see no reason why this album, similar to Iain Matthews', was not a tremendous success. You can hear clips of all the songs here.

* A live, not too elaborated version of the fabulous track that opens the album, what it is is a dream, can be heard here.

+ I also recommend listening to Wild as the Wind (a tribute to Rick Danko, The band's bassist, among other titles that we'll discuss in more detail some other day), and I'm in love. In any case, I think the whole disk is a masterpiece. Folk-rock, if you want to know. Little bit of blues, little bit of country, also. Read this, if you want more info. In this last link, you have two incomplete songs (you need to have the qt plugin).

* Ok, got some more Steve Forbert songs fo' ya' :

- Mississippi.

- Gambling blues.

- Any old time Nashville.

One year after 11-M
+ I am sorry, I could not let this opportunity go away. I have been all day remembering what happened one year ago. As others have said, I also traveled in those trains.

+ That's why I want to post two press excerpts and one opinion article. They clearly state what no other person has said, until today.

+ Madeleine Albright (former U.S.A. Secretary of State) said: "the way we treat terrorism generates more terrorists", "La manera en que tratamos el terrorismo genera más terroristas", (El País, 10/3/05, page 9).

+ Jorge Dezcallar (former chief of spanish inteligence) said: "the role of Spain in Irak increased the risk of terrorists attacks", "El papel de España en Irak aumentó el riesgo de atentado", (El País, 10/3/05, page 21).

+ Finally, please read Juan José Millás' column in last page of El País (11/3/05):

Spanish power-pop
+ There is a great bunch of spanish groups that keep the flame on for power-pop. Today I bring you music from a group that probably fits that label. You decide!.

+ The Runarounds are raw, very vital, and not too pop. Power, a lot. They got some local recognition in their home town, Murcia. It seems that they are alive but I'm not sure. You'll easily recognize some 60's influences in these songs from their last album, ahora sí. If you like what you hear, please buy them the record.

* Please, listen to their the kids are alright. Tough guys!

* or listen to ven. Isn't it punkower pop?

* or listen to ¿cómo estás? Sure they listened to the Rezillos!.

Spanish alt-rock
+ I know, etiquettes are not fair, do not reflect exactly what they pretend, and whatever. But, they are useful to know what we are talking about.

+ Today, I would like to post about a novel group, Nube (Cloud). Read first this kind of bloginterview:

* Ok, they're good guys, they play very well, then you should listen to them. Please listen to romper el pasado.

* Listen to Selma.

* Listen to después de esta noche.

American Pie
------------------------------------A long, long time ago,
------------I can still remember how that music used to make me smile.
------And I knew if I had my chance, that I could make those people dance,
-------------------------and maybe they'd be happy for a while.

* Don McLean wrote it and entered rock history in 1971. Listen to The Song here.

+ If, as me, you are/were intrigued by the lyrics, please read this comprehensive analysis.

* Madonna covered it not so long ago.

+ In summary, Don was a teenager (15 years) when he heard about the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, Richie Valens and the pilot. In American Pie he remembers that day and adds other memories and images of US life during 60s and early 70s.

Buddy Holly and the day the music died!
+ Listen to the guy all by himself!

* That'll be the day.

* Rave on.

* Everyday.

* True love ways.

* Crying, waiting, hoping.

* Oh boy.

* Raining in my heart.

+ Wasn't he great?.

+ If you want to go through what happened that night, please go here.

* Bonus: Marshall Crenshaw ' s soldier of love. Gmail account for free for 49 of you who guess why I posted Marshall Crenshaw here with Buddy Holly.

The explanation (maybe) to Weezer's Buddy Holly
+ You know, Buddy Holly (see my previous post) was the song that cleared the way for Weezer in 1994.

+ The first time I heard it I was caught with the infectious grungy rhythm and the lyrics. Moreover, Buddy Holly! (big words, my friend). You don't know the lyrics. Ok, here you are.

+ But, the verse... uhmm, I was kind of puzzled:
---------------------------- Woo-ee-oo I look just like Buddy Holly
-------------------------------Oh-oh, and you're Mary Tyler Moore

+ There are hundreds of explanations (a boy protects a girl) that you can read here.

+ But, I was asking myself, so Mary Tyler Moore and Buddy Holly?. What's the relationship between them?. First I found this. Not convincent,

+ And then, I found this:
-------------The Crickets wrote and performed the theme song used for The Mary Tyler Moore Show for seven seasons.

+ possible, right?. Please, if you don't agree just tell me.

+ Loor y gloria a Buddy Holly & The Crickets (y a Weezer).

Weezer
+ I am not a big fan of Weezer, but I like a lot some of their songs. I do not know if I did not listen enough their records, but I always play their songs instead of their albums. I don't know if I make myself clear.

* For instance, Buddy Holly is just a #1.

* Island in the sun, great composition.

* Undone.
Excellent.

* Hashpipe. and here also. This is rock, my friend!.

* Velouria (the pixies' cover).

* Weezer's videos here.

+ I have added a link (see the columns on the left) so you can go rapidly to the artists I have posted about. Of course, many links will not work, but you know how to get them, right?.

John Hiatt
+ Another case of a real fine artist, very few times touched by commercial success.

* John Hiatt has probably played every single style there is, country, pop, blues, rock, new-wave (he learned from pal Nick Lowe). But you have to hear him singing memphis in the meantime, when he sings:
------------------Sure I like country music
----------------------I like mandolins
-------------But right now I need a telecaster
-----------Through a vibro-lux turned up to ten

+ These are the words of a rocker, don't you think so?

+ Ok, that song is one of his classics. That one and the others I bring to you today are from a radio show, in september 1995, The King Biscuit Flower Hour. Be sure you check it out in some days, when march list of shows is ready. February was not bad!.

* Listen to alone in the dark or Thank you girl or Your dad did or Little thing called love.
