Snow in Lliria on Saturday

The members of the team at Barcelo´s Lliria office took time off to enjoy the rare snowfall on Saturday morning. By Saturday afternoon the snow had disappeared and the normal blue skies had returned.

Good news for house buyers in Ireland!

From 29th April Aer Lingus and Ryanair will join Iberia in introducing regular flights between Dublin and Valencia making it easier for Irish house buyers to make the journey to this growing (but still very Spanish) area of Spain.

School system in Valencia

In March 2004, Lliria council published a multi-lingual guide to the education system in the Valencian Community. We give below the main points of that document. An original copy can be obtained from the council education office in the Town Hall of Lliria.

Education is obligatory from the ages of 6 to 16. There are generally two types of schools – state schools and charitable or church schools (state-subsidised). Unlike most state schools, children usually must wear uniforms at charitable or church schools.
Both the official languages of the area (Spanish and Valenciano) are taught in schools.
Education from age 6 to 16 is free – although parents must buy all the textbooks and necessary materials at the beginning of each school year. Financial help for the purchase of school materials may be available.
Registration for September is officially in mid-May – although late applications will be accepted. Registration: Town Hall. Department of Education on the first floor and opposite the information desk.
There is voluntary pre-school (0-3) and pre-primary (3-6) education available. From age 16, children can choose either High School (designed to prepare children for university), vocational training (prepares students for skilled work) or basic training (for jobs requiring only basic training).

As in England, schools have a Board of Governors (including teacher, parent, student and non-teacher representatives). Any parent can stand for election to the Board of Governors. Any member of the family can also join the Parents Association, which organises various activities throughout the year.
Your child’s course tutor is responsible for assuring that his or her education is progressing adequately. The course tutor has a timetable for visits from parents.
School is, as in England, from Monday to Friday and divided into three terms. These are usually: September-December, January-March & April-June. Primary and pre-primary schools are normally open from 9am to 12pm and from 3pm to 5pm., but from June to September this can be shortened to 9am – 1pm. Secondary schools are normally open from 8am to 3pm.
