DARREN ALMOND. ( Inglaterra)

Darren Almond. Wigan (Inglaterra), 1971, es uno de los más aclamados creadores de aquella famosa generación de artistas británicos conocidos como Young British Artists, que revolucionaron el panorama artístico internacional a principios de los años noventa.
El tiempo, el concepto de “duración”, la melancolía y la noción de memoria histórica pública y privada, son los ejes sobre los cuales se desarrolla su trabajo. A través de esculturas, fotografías, vídeos, instalaciones y un innovador uso de la tecnología sus obras envuelven al espectador en una experiencia temporal en la que sonido e imagen, ambiente, reflexión y relato se revelan dentro de una atmósfera cotidiana muy particular. El DA2 será el primer centro de arte español que reúna una selección de sus videoinstalaciones más significativas de los últimos 6 años destacando entre todas ellas:
“Traction”, (1999) una ambiciosa proyección en tres pantallas, que retratan al padre y la madre del artista. En una de ellas se ve al padre contestando a las preguntas de Almond sobre los daños que sufrió trabajando como albañil, en la pantalla que está en frente su madre es grabada escuchando la entrevista y en la pantalla central, a cámara lenta, una máquina excava y remueve la tierra. La película se convierte en un retrato íntimo de la familia, dejando al descubierto cicatrices internas y externas, mientras revela la preocupación del artista por las marcas físicas y sicológicas que deja en las personas el
paso del tiempo.
“Schacta”, 2001, muestra en dos pantallas enfrentadas a un grupo de trabajadores y una cámara avanzando por un túnel con una música de fondo que recuerda el tambor de una tribu africana, concretamente de Uganda al mismo tiempo que la voz de una mujer acompaña la música.
La poética y monumental videoinstalación If I Had You ( Si te tuviera), (2004) seleccionada recientemente para los prestigiosos Premios Turner, se ha adaptado específicamente a las particularidades arquitectónicas de la “antigua cárcel” del DA2 y podría entenderse como la continuación lógica de “Traction”.
La Instalación “If I Had You”, 2003, es como un álbum familiar en movimiento, como caminar por la historia de una vida que es la vida del propio Darren Almond y particularmente de su abuela. Según el propio Almond recuerda: ” (...) If I Had you comienza cuando visité a mi abuela hace unos años. Ella estaba en el hospital y al verme me confundió con mi abuelo y ese fue el punto de partida de la pieza. Decidí llevarla a visitar una sala en la torre de Blackpool, donde ella acostumbraba a bailar con mi abuelo. Mi abuela me dijo al oído que le echaba mucho de menos y que le gustaría volver a bailar con su marido, no tenía su cuerpo pero su mente aún estaba con él (...)”
Las cuatro proyecciones de la instalación muestran en primer lugar una fuente iluminada de agua, el elixir de la vida, en segundo lugar una pareja desconocida de bailarines..., en tercer lugar una larga pantalla con un molino que simboliza el paso del tiempo. Por último, la imagen de su abuela preside las cuatro pantallas, mirando y recordando su pasado mientras descubrimos en las expresiones de su cara diversos estados de ánimo que van de la tristeza a la melancolía.
Darrend Almond siempre evoca y juega con sentimientos básicos, en el caso de If I Had You se trata de sus propios recuerdos, su visión personal de su familia, sus fantasmas íntimos... pues existe algo fantasmal en los movimientos de los bailarines, en la música distante, en las extrañas luces de ese molino que da vueltas... se trata pues de un tributo a su propia familia, a su recuerdos juveniles, a esa distante voz del pasado que le llama (y nos llama) una y otra vez.

Through sculptures, photographies, videos, facilities and an innovating use of the technology their works surround to the spectator in a temporary experience in which sound and image, atmosphere, reflection and story are revealed within very particular a daily atmosphere. The DA2 will be the first centre of Spanish art that reunites a selection of its last more significant videoinstalltions of the 6 years emphasizing between all of them:
“Traction”, (1999) an ambitious projection in three screens, that the father and the mother of the artist portray to. In one of them it is seen the father answering the questions of Almond on the damages that suffered working like bricklayer, in the screen that is opposite its mother is recorded listening to the interview and in the central screen, to slow motion, a machine excavates and removes the Earth. The film in the open becomes an intimate picture of the family, leaving internal and external scars, while it reveals the preoccupation of the artist by the physical and psychological marks who leaves in the people passage of time.
“Schacta”, 2001, show in two screens faced a group of workers and a camera advancing by a tunnel a background music that remembers the drum of an African tribe, concretely of Uganda at the same time that the voice of a woman accompanies music.
The poetic and monumental videoinstallation If I Had You, (2004) selected recently for the prestigious Turner Prizes, has adapted specifically to the architectonic particularities of the “old jail” of the DA2 and could be understood like the logical continuation of “Traction”.
The Installation “If I Had You”, 2003, are like a familiar album in movement, walking by the history of a life who is the life of the own Darren Almond and particularly of its grandmother. According to the own Almond it remembers: ” (...) If I Had you begins when I visited my grandmother years ago. She was in the hospital and when she saw me she confused with my grandfather and that was the departure point of the piece. I decided to take it to visit a room in the tower of Blackpool, where she was used to dancing with my grandfathers. My grandmother whispered me in the ear that threw to him much of less and than it would like to return to dance with her husband, did not have her body but its mind still was with him (...)” The four projections of the installation show in the first place an illuminated water source, elixir of the life, secondly a unknown pair of dancers…, thirdly one long screen with a windmill that symbolizes the passage of time. Finally, the image of his grandmother presides over the four screens, watching and remembering its past while we discovered in the diverse expressions of its face moods that go of the sadness to the melancholy.
Darren Almond always evokes and plays with basic feelings, in the case of If I Had You is his own memories, his personal vision of his family, his intimate ghosts… because something phantasmal in the movements of the dancers exists, in distant music, the strange lights of that mill that gives returns… is then a tribute of his own family, to his youthful memories, that distant voice of the past which it calls to him time and time again (and it calls to us).

Darren Almond.
