Missing Schanen
How do I miss you, Roch. The message you sent me yesterday was a perfect way to start what I expect to be a perfect year. If I miss one thing from my PhD years (well, apart from transfers) is your permanent smile, your unconditioned optimism, your friendship, your physics knowledge and experimental expertise (Ok, that was more than one thing). It was really motivating talking to you about general and profound quantum mechanics questions only to let the conversation slip into more mundane yet equally amusing subjects. I can honestly say, hands down, that you were, probably along with Phil Glasson, the only person in the lab with which talking about physics was truly stimulating. And, if that wasn't enough, you were also the kind of person anybody would want as a friend.

One thing I really like about you, a very rare quality in people nowadays, is that you really were consistent with your life. During the day you could be confounded with the lab equipment and during the evening you could be confounded with the furniture at The Holy Tree. For years on. It was refreshing to join you for a drink every so often on my way home. If I had had a rough day at the lab and needed a friendly shoulder to cry upon, I had the certainty that yours would be always available at The Holy Tree. I have to admit that the piano they had there was a pretty good incentive, as well, but not as good as your conversation.

I haven't known from you for a couple of months. My fault, since I should phone you more often. I will, probably, this week. But I just wanted to dedicate you the first post of 2007, for no special reason, but because you deserve it as much as any other. Actually, more than most.

Hope everything is fine and research is going along smoothly. On my side, life is getting better by the minute. Remember that I'm up for giving a seminar at Manchester, not because of the seminar itself, but because it would be the perfect excuse to see you. I have switched research fields and it is therefore unlikely that we will coincide in a conference anytime soon. Needless to say, you are more than welcome to give a seminar at the Cavendish. Just tell me you want to and I will arrange everything nicely for you. Expenses will be paid and beers are on me.

I miss you, seriously. Keep smiling. And quit smoking, if you haven't already: I'd like to have you around a bit longer.

You rock, Roch (excuse the pun). Hopefully 2007 will be the best of your years so far and the worst of all the years to come.

Love,

A.
